Our missions teams go to support current work being done by partners to prevent trafficking, and our training teams actively work to support the staff of aftercare homes, children?s homes, prevention programs, and investigative rescue teams through trainings and retreats. In 2023, JOY International launched a new support network for service providers fighting trafficking internationally, the JOY Freedom Collective. The collective is made up of leaders from anti-trafficking safe homes and prevention programs in 4 different countries. Each of these leaders faces unique challenges as they try and lead the young people in their care. The collective is an opportunity for leaders to come together online and pray, encourage one another, discuss relevant topics related to anti-trafficking work, and share ideas and resources. In January of 2023, JOY International hosted a pastor's conference for 60+ pastors in Uganda to equip and encourage regional leaders to lead with humility and purity while encouraging them to stand for justice in their regions. By encouraging and pouring into the church leaders, we are helping to support a network of justice-minded churches in the region that will oppose trafficking, forced marriage, and child sacrifice. In May of 2023, JOY International took a team of 11 to Belize on a missions trip where we partnered with several NGOs that provide services to survivors and at-risk youth and children. The team led camps for 200 children, including basic self-defense, and also did manual labor for a trafficking safe home for minors. The team also built garden beds so the girls in the home could grow a garden for both therapeutic and nutritional purposes. In July and August, JOY International hosted two self-defense and empowerment classes for teen girls in the US. These classes addressed human trafficking education, internet safety, tricks of traffickers/online predators, situational awareness, and basic self-defense moves. In September JOY took a specially trained volunteer team to Belize to lead a training and retreat for 30 staff from 7 different agencies. These staff and care providers came from children's homes, after-care shelters, and crisis pregnancy shelters, and were caring for orphans and foster care kids, all of whom have been impacted by trauma and are therefore at a high risk of further exploitation from trafficking. The team taught about the impacts of trauma and shame, and how healing is possible for trafficked, abused, and traumatized individuals with time, love, and support. In December, JOY International partnered with The Asservo Project for collaborative training and a conference for Mukti Home in Nepal. Together, we trained the Investigation and Rescue Team and the Mukti Home Security Team on investigation techniques, surveillance, and counter-surveillance to improve rescue success outcomes and increase security for the home. At the end of the trip, JOY International and Mukti Home hosted a conference for all players in the anti-trafficking sphere in Kathmandu, including UN staff, other NGOs, the Anti-Human Trafficking Bureau, child welfare agencies, and police leaders from districts surrounding Kathmandu. The goal of the conference was to increase collaboration between the various agencies, as right now many of them are not willing to work with others. 133694 Prevention and Awareness: JOY International staff travel to schools, churches, community centers, and other groups to talk about what Human Trafficking is, how to protect vulnerable youth, and what JOY International is doing to fight it. Recently, JOY?s founder has focused education opportunities on the increasing issue of sextortion for American youth. In 2023, JOY International staff directly educated approximately 1162 students and adults through various speaking engagements and teaching opportunities and hosted 20-plus live events in communities around the US where individuals can learn about human trafficking in their neighborhoods and around the world. 107613 JOY Empowerment Program in Uganda: JOY International's program in Kasese is about more than just sending a child to school. Sponsorship provides safety, food, clothing, hygiene supplies, medical care, and education to girls who are most at risk of being forced into early child marriage or trafficked to larger cities. JOY International funds the education and living expenses of 37 at-risk girls in Kasese, Uganda, offering them hope for a brighter future. JOY International?s objective in Uganda is simply that none of the girls are forced into early marriage and that each girl graduates High School and has opportunities for further education and/or a job that provides for their basic needs. The total number of girls that JOY sponsors in Kasese increased to 37 this year. JOY is covering all education expenses for these girls, and providing food, clothing, hygienic supplies, and school supplies for them as well. The prevention program helps ensure that the girls are not pressured into marriage early due to poverty or lack of resources for the family. Some of the children we sponsor are orphans, refugees fleeing from the Congo, or have been abandoned by their families due to a lack of resources. One new girl that we started sponsoring this year was fleeing the Congo with her family when she and her brother got separated from their parents. The two children ended up in Kasese with a group of refugees but their parents could not be located. Local police contacted JOY International to help find them housing, and JOY committed to sponsoring the girl.
