Part III response or note to any other line in Part III In 2023, we propelled our mission of ensuring a safe and effective cleanup at Hanford. Collectively, we delved into the implications of what it means to all live downriver from Hanford. This led to thousands of individuals rallying with us, urging President Biden and Energy Secretary Granholm to stick to the plan of a safe and complete cleanup at Hanford.In 2023, we achieved significant accomplishments that bear repeating. WA Attorney General Bob Ferguson, UA Local 598, and Hanford Challenge, successfully extended a settlement agreement with the Energy Department. This extension reinforced our commitment to safeguarding Hanford workers from vapor exposures. The emerging technology designed to protect tank farm workers from chemical vapors appears extremely promising. We are more optimistic than ever that Hanford workers will never again face exposure to these carcinogenic vapors once these technological measures are implemented.We witnessed our membership and social media engagement skyrocket to unprecedented levels, with membership growth surpassing that of any previous year. Thanks to initiatives such as our Nuclear Waste Scholar Series, Expand the Story Oppenheimer series, worker resource pages, poetry contests, and our collaboration with Patagonia, we reached a wider audience than ever before. 1. Hanford Cleanup Program:Hanford Challenge exists to ensure permanent protection for the planet and its inhabitants from the effects of contamination at Hanford. In 2023, Hanford Challenge did a lot of work to accomplish our goals under this program pushing for greater transparency and accountability. 324 Building: Hanford Challenge started a conversation about 324 Building cleanup and pushed for information to be shared after revealing information being hidden by the USDOE and its contractor. As a result, USDOE reversed course and started to include EPA in evaluating options for changing the cleanup plan. Grout Concerns: USDOE continued to work through steps to test grouting Hanford tank waste. Hanford Challenge continued to share our concerns about the site using a less protective waste form than glass to immobilize Hanford tank waste via our website, email and public comments. The grout test is planned for spring 2025. 2. Worker Advocacy Program:We continue to provide free legal representation to Hanford whistleblowers, give experttestimony on legislation related to Hanford, and prepare for environmental litigation.Hanford Challenge provides legal representation and advocacy for Hanford workers andwhistleblowers. We support workers who report waste and fraud, health and safety risks, and violations of laws at the Hanford Nuclear Site. We also fight for workforce access to protective equipment and healthcare. Hanford Challenge stops attempts to evade regulations, challenges cleanup shortcuts, and empowers individuals to act. We form strategic networks of unions, tribes, environmental organizations, community groups, public officials, and concerned individuals to hold Hanford Accountable. 3. Community Engagement Program:In 2023, Hanford Challenge continued to file public comments on emerging issues, facilitated written comments from community members, and produced several petitions. Hanford Challenge worked to increase accessibility to Hanford and the diversity of people engaged with Hanford cleanup through entry-level engagement, collaborations with community organizations, storytelling, poetry contests, and amplifying cleanup issues that are not being talked about formally by the cleanup agencies.We delved into Hanfords international ties to broaden the narrative presented by the Oppenheimer film. We developed 20-minute interactive stations to familiarize middle school students with Hanfords history. By launching a nuclear waste themed poetry contest, we helped students across Washington State discover their poetic talents. The enlightening presentations and research shared by the speakers from the Nuclear Waste Scholar Series sparked intellectual excitement throughout the year. We marked the release of Shannon Crams book, Unmaking the Bomb, at the UW bookstore, which was attended by over 100 people. We received a gift of cultural celebration from Yakama Nation youth and elders during an evening at the Yakama Nation Cultural Heritage Center and Museum. We fostered relationships and learned new narratives during a tour of the B-reactor with the Oregon Hanford Cleanup Board.
