<Desc>Immigrant Relief: ~~ We surveyed our 21 Immigrant Relief Outreach Specialist from every region, but North Africa and learned that 45% identified rental assistance & affordable housing as their community's most pressing issue, 25% identified mental health/youth program, and 15% identified immigration health. Nearly 55% of the Outreach Specialists communicate with their African community members by phone, nearly 40% text, and a little over 10% via video calls. None communicate with their community members via email, which we have been able to share with local to state agencies as a reason they are unable to reach African community members via their emailed newsletter. Many elected officials across the region and their staff members indicated this was vital information for them to have and caused them to rethink how the outreach to our community members. Our outreach specialists serving community members primarily in Snohomish, King, Pierce, Thurston, and Spokane areas. ~~ In our third year of the COVID-19 Immigrant Relief program, we built the program by exponentially expanding our outreach team, signing MOUs with each member organization or individual, creating a structured training program with a "train the trainer" trusted messenger model that led to our proudest accomplishment which was expanding the reach of DSHS Immigrant COVID-19 Relief financial assistance to every country of origin in Africa for the first time, nearly doubling the rate of Africans receiving COVID-19 funding in 2022-23.</Desc>

<Desc>Riverton Park United Methodist Church Migrants: ~~ Due to violence and conflict over natural resources -- precious minerals, copper, uranium, diamonds, gold, iron, cobalt - people are fleeing for their lives. WSCACL worked as a consulting non-profit to the Riverton Park United Methodist Church (RPUMC) Migrants Homeless Program Coordinating Committee and have educated the Committee and Washingtonians about African cultural needs and shared the regional scope of the migrant crisis. We conducted a survey of our community leaders that reported there are at least 12,000 asylum seeking African and Caribbean migrants across Washington state. The leaders shared that many of their asylum seekers are staying in other churches and overnight shelters that are not prepared to address their unique cultural, linguistic, or legal needs. ~~ We supported the Migrants program through providing technical assistance during our educational discussing unique African cultural considerations to how to meet African migrant's needs, shifted the discussion away from "one city's crisis to the entire region's crisis" through our community leader's survey data at conferences and meetings across the counties, in the cities, and at the state level. We also provided consistent on the ground support for Riverton Park United Methodist Church programs including the afterschool tutoring club, coordinated the leaders together to donate culturally appropriate dishes that Latinx and Africans enjoyed over the holidays and materials, and consistently provided food and moral support to care for the many volunteers and staff that worked tirelessly to support the migrants.</Desc>

<Desc>Immigrant Rights: ~~ One of the core services we uniquely offer agencies/organizations to support better communication and empowerment of African immigrants/refugees includes an outreach and translation services team of community influential leaders. Our trusted community leaders can speak 33 major African languages and represent every region in Africa. Unlike other translation services that only translate material for agencies, our community influential leaders & translators also utilize their vast 140,000+ combined social media reach across popular African social media platforms and across the state to share their translated materials in their trusted networks and providing direct outreach for the agency/organization. We also have access to broader African diaspora members through our trusted network of Board members and former Leadership team members and partners. We hired an immigration attorney and negotiated a fixed rate to support ten asylum seekers receive legal assistance on their asylum documentation process and supported a referral consultant to support the asylees with support getting resources for their housing, utilities, food, legal clinics, youth programs, and wrap around services. We hosted the International Rescue Committee's (IRC) Center for Economic Opportunity program in a workshop that provides credit building, financial literacy, financial resource support for refugees and immigrants. The workshop was attended by over 30 people. Seven to 8 workshop attendees received IRC financial resource support including 1 person who received a $50K loan.</Desc>

<Desc>Other Programs: ~~ Civic Engagement: We continued to build our synergy between our Civic Engagement & Joint Committee work with the two committees working harmoniously together to reach their annual objectives. The Civic Engagement team lead their Civic Engagement Civic Class Series, Led by Civic Engagement Chair Chris Lovings, the Civics Class series brought WSCACL members in Snohomish, WSCACL Community Advisory Council members, and Snohomish Elected officials together to learn more about how to get engaged in local civic activities and to register to vote. Attendees completed Pledge to Vote cards and those that indicated an interest in attending a leadership program were shared information about upcoming Leadership opportunities. We also partnered with Urban League of Metropolitan of Seattle to host a King County Civics 101 Class at High Point Community Center that focused on our youth. Our keynote speaker, a King County Superior Court Judge had a fun time engaging 25 youth and family members in an interactive voter's guide quiz where youth competed for prizes. We incorporated a civic engagement component to most in person WSCACL sponsored events in 2023 by distributing and collecting our Pledge to Vote cards from attendees and inviting elected officials and local staff to bring any resources related to their local civic engagement activities, while also highlighting about our civic engagement committee's work. ~~ Co-Governance Operational Leadership Model: To support the Civic Engagement & Joint Committee work synergically together to accomplish organizational goals with wisdom from frontline community leaders and build systems and processes to strengthen our foundation and connections, we launched two subcommittees-Event Planning & Grant. We appointed co-leads and a chair to each subcommittee and grew the volunteer teams to 13 subcommittee members for both subcommittees. The grants subcommittee members would share responsibility of attending potential grant information sessions based on their availability and share highlights of what they learned as we applied their new knowledge, along with the Executive Director's own experience and worked on grant applications together building grant subcommittee's awareness of how to better approach applying for a grant in Washington state and how best to read a grant application and/information session to maximize the strength of your grant application. The Event Planning team developed a checklist and roles for planning and executing WSCACL sponsored events three months out to the day of the event. They met after each WSCACL sponsored event to determine what went well and what didn't and implemented lesson learned strategies at future events. The subcommittee chairs coordinated with the committee chairs and executive director to execute each event. ~~ Rental Assistance: We supported ten of our most vulnerable South King County tenants (3 from Renton, 3 from Federal Way, 2 from Auburn, 1 from Kent, & 1 from Tukwila). Both landlords and the tenants were very appreciative of the rental assistance support and sent us personal messages and calls of "Thank You." ~~ Financial Literacy: We partnered with the City of Lynnwood, the League of Women Voters of Snohomish County, and Narratives Unbound on a well attended Trauma Informed Financial Coaching mini-workshop in Lynnwood. Attendees learned our scarcity mindset from generations of trauma limits our ability to live an abundant life and experience healthy money habits. ~~ Culture & Heritage: We developed an African Funeral & Memorial Support cultural food & services program to support our community leaders that lost an immediate family member. We participated in the City of Lynnwood's Juneteenth Festival, referring African diaspora businesses and cultural groups to be part of the festival's programming and receive wealth building support as part of our economic empowerment goals. Each in person event WSCACL hosts includes a celebration of African culture & heritage through our décor and intergenerational inclusion. ~~ WSCACL's 5th Annual Leadership Summit: WSCACL co-hosted its 5th Annual Community Leadership Summit with partner, Africans on the Eastside, which was well attended by over 60 attendees including Bellevue non-profit organizations and Bellevue elected officials. WSCACL's partner organization and member organizations that reside in Bellevue were the marquee of the event along with members of our youth program, African Youth Drug Prevention, that shared which youth initiatives were important for elders to support. ~~ KC Flood: We provided critical African community input for the 2024 King County Flood Management Plan engaging in hundreds of conversations about flooding. For example, the level of concern about flooding was higher among people interviewed compared to input KC staff received at community events or through KC's survey portal. A theme was the high value placed on County communication and education. Write-in responses had over 75% asking for a range of communication and education activities. The suggestions focus on three areas - help individuals better understand flooding and risks, help people prepare and reduce their own risk, and to support and provide resources to organizations to be active partners. We received 380 responses from two surveys conducted in Summer & the Fall of 2023. In the first survey, 224 respondents who provided their zip code, 88% were from King County, especially from zip codes in Kent, SeaTac, Kirkland, Seattle, and Federal Way. A majority of WSCACL's respondents identified as Black, Indigenous or People of Color and almost 50% were immigrants from other nations, two of our high priority audiences. The KC Flood Team indicated they couldn't have heard from these folks without us. ~~ Youth: Our youth program, African Youth Drug Prevention (AYDP) program is a group of African and Caribbean youth who are V.O.C.A.L., "Voicing Our Concerns And Leading". AYDP is dedicated to preventing drug use in youth, transforming our community, becoming advocates, and developing leadership skills. AYDP has been active since 2019 with their own website and social media channels. The youth program has garnered multiple awards from both the African community and the University of Washington's Public Health community for engaging and creative public health messages that are uniquely relatable to immigrant and African youth. Their presentations and meetings were attended by over hundred attendees. Youth presenters were often praised by adults for their mastery of presentation and advocacy skills attracting local celebrities and dignitaries. ~~ Speed Management Advisory Council Class: WSCACL was asked to participate in Washington's Traffic Safety Commission's Speed Management Advisory Council's to help design and launch their Strategic Highway Safety Plan for zero fatal and serious injury crashes by 2030. Between 2015-2019, Black community members represent the 2nd largest sub-population in the US to die of traffic fatalities. We asked our leaders what type of outreach activities would help our communities understand the high risk on the road. Their responses included: connect alcohol/marijuana youth substance use to Speed Management awareness; increase use of successful red-light cameras in reducing speeding; increase presence of roundabouts & bumps to slow down drivers in high-speed areas w/ high traffic injuries/fatalities; support more low-income drivers to participate in expensive formal driving school programs through driving school scholarships/discounts; graduates of formal driving programs drive more cautiously. ~~ Climate Justice: WSCACL's commitment to serving the community is demonstrated through its robust Environmental Justice program which includes providing strategic and capacity building guidance on various Front & Centered workgroups and the Power Building & Capacity Committee, participating and recruiting member organizations to become a Climate/Environmental Justice warrior and a member of Front & Centered Coalition. Host focus groups with community leaders to share about various Climate/Environmental justice pressing issues. WSCACL was notified by Climate/Environmental Justice Coalition, Front/Centered, that through WSCACL's internal membership & summit attendance recruitment efforts; our organization hosted the largest number of new members and summit attendees. ~~ Prog Joint Committee: The Joint Committee works to preserve our Culture & Heritage, protect our mental/physical health, and seeks to teach our children and families how to improve their wellness and build generational wealth. ~~ Housing: We provide our connections and resources to support placement of Riverton Park United Methodist Church Migrant Homeless program which led to the securing of temporary-permanent housing for 56 residents</Desc>
