With a new program manager leading the team, we made great progress in 2023. As a result of our efforts, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is transitioning off gas powered grounds and trail maintenance equipment onto professional-grade battery-powered electric equipment including chainsaws, pole-saws, and brush-cutters. Isle Royale National Park is poised to power more of its operations with solar, reducing the need for delivered fuel. At Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, new clean electric appliances are now in place and a project to decarbonize heating and cooling in key buildings is in process. Lake Superior's national parks are among the first to advance decarbonization under the new National Park Service Green Parks Plan and our work has generated national attention and extensive media coverage. 112500 115000 Our work on inclusive cultural interpretation and education also made important progress. We successfully secured support for Agaaming Aki (the land across the water) an experiential learning program involving the Grand Portage and Red Cliff Bands of Lake Superior Chippewa (Anishinaabe), Grand Portage National Monument, 1854 Treaty Authority, and NPLSF. Through the program, intertribal youth will network and build relationships and confidence through hands-on education, science-based activities, career exploration, and community connections on the Grand Portage reservation and Minong (Isle Royale National Park). In the area of public engagement, NPLSF sponsored Rendezvous Days at Grand Portage, the Lutsong Music Festival, and the opening reception for A Sea Change for Lake Superior, a new documentary. NPLSF's work to protect natural resources in our parks included active engagement in national efforts to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species through ballast water, including elevating the issue with elected officials and building awareness through the Lake Superior Podcast and other forums.
