It should be noted here that the $16,000 spent by Plastic Free Restaurants on the 3,200 trays was money spent in 2022 (not 2023). The FUSD grant/contribution from Plastic Free Restaurants was made in 2023, but the bulk of the money was spent the year before (and kept as a stockpile of trays at the manufacturer's headquarters). Several of the schools failed to follow through, so the unused supplies are being donated by Zero Waste Ithaca to a school district in Rhode Island in 2024. Alameda Unified School District 2060 Challenger Drive Alameda CA 94501 800860200 5717 Cost 1,368 spoons, 1,296 forks, and 1,300 trays For the purchase and implementation of stainless steel trays, forks, and spoons at three elementary schools in the AUSD system. 3 0 Schedule I, Part I, Line 2 Our grants (or "subsidies") are given solely for the purchase of reusable food ware that is replacing single-use petroleum-based plastic items (or single-use compostable items containing PFAS) in restaurants, school cafeterias, or other eating establishments. Because we deliver our grant money either as reimbursement after-the-fact (based on invoices submitted to us) or in the form of direct orders on behalf of a school, there is zero room for waste or fraud. Basically, our money only goes to reimburse those who have already spent money, and we don't dole it out until we can prove that the money has been spent on the items we wish to subsidize. There is a mechanism within our bylaws that allows the Board of Directors to vote on compensation for staff members only if and when our annual revenue exceeds $500,000. That has not yet happened, so there have been no deliberations or conversations about compensation. Form 990, Part XI, Line 9 In 2022, we pre-purchased 5,000 stainless steel trays for placement at future public school sites, at slightly less than $8.00 per tray. In 2023, our subsidy offering to schools was capped at a maximum of $5.00 per item. We created a bit of an accounting headache for ourselves, as the original intent was to have the schools pay the manufacturer/supplier for the amount above $5.00 per item. Instead, our pre-purchase meant that two subsidized school districts (Alameda CA and Mansfield CT) had to reimburse us after-the-fact. Alameda sent us $8,736 for its >$5.00/item share of 3,200 trays. Mansfield sent us $4,227 for its share of 400 trays and some shipping costs. We won't be doing it this way again in the future, as we have eliminated our per-item subsidy cap, and we don't need more accounting headaches.
