We respectively request abatement of any late filing or failure to file penalties due to Reasonable Cause as follows: United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA) is an organization run 100% by Volunteer Board Members and Officers. We have only 1 part-time staff working as an Executive Director. Our mission is to provide competition and development opportunities for student athletes and thus they help manage the 12 conferences which operate as chapters under USCSA umbrella and status as non-profit. As of July 1,2023, USCSA experienced significant transitions in the 5 Key Officer and Board including President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Vice President of Nordic, and Executive at Large. As the leadership roles and responsibilities were transferred, the responsibility to file a proper Form 8868 Extension to file due November 15, 2023, was missed. On November 20,2023 after discussion with a Volunteer tax Professional, we discovered that USCSA was late (3 business days) and immediately contacted the Internal Revenue Service and were connected with Agent Mrs. McFarland with the Charitable Organization Division who advised us to write a letter and attach to our filing. Unfortunately, we were unable to complete and file a return shortly after this discovery because there are 12 district conferences located throughout the country that operate as chapters reporting to and through USCSA. Since they are also managed by volunteers, the responsible party changes frequently (most years). Therefore, USCSA needs additional time to accumulate and summarize the information in order to file which necessitates an extension of time. USCSA was incorporated in 1974 and granted Non Profit Status in 2007 and has successfully timely filed 990 tax returns for all 15 years. Based on the above we respectively request abatement of any late filing or failure to file penalties. This letter has been sent to the Internal Revenue Service with a copy of the entire return.
