We use the space at least 4 days per week for food, clothing, and book distributions. Whenever the space is not being used for a distribution, we offer it to community members to borrow for other mutual aid projects or to offer free or low-cost events to the public. This year the space was regularly used for an English class, a board game night, an open mic, an art supply swap, and a collective that supports transgender people. We also hosted one-time events like an art show, a staging of a play, and a fundraiser for laid-off union workers. With our space, we are also able to host team members from the Astoria Worker Project, a local effort of the Consortium for Worker Education. They sublet an office for two of their staff members and use the common space of the community center when its available to offer classes. 10254 Diapers & Wipes: Every month we buy and distribute diapers and baby wipes to the community. We distribute these first-come-first-served, and each person gets one pack of diapers and one pack of wipes. We do these distributions during our Monday food pantry, so anyone who comes for diapers can also pick up food. The funds are spent on new packages of diapers and wipes, and we also collect donations of baby needs and distribute them at that time. We try to always have formula and baby food available on that day. We take the truck out on three weekly food pick ups, two from grocery distributors and one from a large bread bakery. We also use the truck to bring food, clothes, and other supplies to distribute at Astoria Houses and Queensbridge Houses. The truck is used as needed to do distributions to people on the streets, in shelters, or at public schools. When available, our drivers also support other food pantries and mutual aid efforts with their pick ups and distributions. (Expenses: $2,650, including grants of $0) (Revenue $0) Holiday & Back to School Distributions: We conducted multiple seasonal and holiday distributions in the last months of 2023. In August and September we did our yearly back to school distribution, giving out backpacks and supplies to kids. For Halloween, we purchased candy to give out and art supplies to create a haunted truck for kids to enjoy. For Thanksgiving, we rented a commercial kitchen and bought ingredients to bake pies to distribute to the community. And in December we did our yearly toy drive, giving toys out to over 100 kids. (Expenses: $2,605, including grants of $0) (Revenue $0) Grants and other assistance to domestic organizations and domestic governments: At the beginning of 2023 we transferred $1,030 to the 31st Avenue Open Street. We sponsored this project in 2022 by accepting a grant from DOT, and these were the funds that were left from that grant. They became an independent tax exempt 501c3 in 2023, so at that time we sent them their remaining funds to spend directly. We also hosted a fundraiser for the Atlanta Solidarity Fund, which is also an independent tax exempt 501c3. We collected $1,574 from donors who attended an art show to support them, and sent them that amount directly. (Expenses: $2,454, including grants of $0) (Revenue $0) Grants and other assistance to domestic individuals: In 2023 we supported two individuals who spent those funds on mutual aid work in their communities. We gave $2,000 to one of the organizers of the Astoria Halal Community Fridge, in support of their Ramadan food distributions. We saw firsthand how much food their whole team distributed through that fridge during the month of Ramandan, and so we were happy to support their program of purchasing food from local small businesses to distribute through their publicly-accessible community fridge. We also hosted a fundraiser for laid-off unionized reproductive justice workers, and collected $454 which was given directly to the workers GoFundMe. (Expenses: $1,388, including grants of $0) (Revenue $0) Support for Migrants & Unhoused People: In the 2023-2024 winter season we did multiple distributions of cold weather gear, especially for people living in shelters and recently-arrived migrants to NYC. We collected coats, boots, warm clothing, and hygiene products, and we purchased additional items to supplement donations. We distributed these at our free store, at shelters, and in public schools. (Expenses: $1,262, including grants of $0) (Revenue $0) Books: These funds were spent on books for The Rolling Library, a project that is housed in our community center. They collect donated books from the community and give them out at the pantry, at our pop ups at NYCHA, and at events they throw all over NYC. They also buy some books in order to make sure they have a good selection, especially books for children in Spanish and with representation from many diverse authors and topics. Margaret made the initial connection between our two organizations, and as our relationship was becoming established, she did extra work helping to orient them to the space, introduce them to our community, and ensure the rental would benefit both organizations.
