The organization provides grants to non-profit organizations that focus on the identification and enrolment of out-of-school girls, the retention of girls in schools and their learning and life-skills. Educate Girls' grantees' core programs contribute to the achievement of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals 4 and 5 directly. Program activities of Educate Girls' grantees in India were impacted in 2020 and 2021 due to continued school closures and restricted mobility (measures imposed by the Government of India to contain the COVID-19 pandemic). Resultantly, the organization's grantees had programmatic underspend in these years. As anticipated, the grant making has increased in the current year as the pandemic lockdowns have eased and schools have reopened. However, the reduction in grant making in 2020 and 2021 has meant that Educate Girls has significant restricted net assets on its statement of financial position. Grantee partners will now require more time to draw down these committed grants. Educate Girls has put plans in place to utilize its restricted net assets towards planned program activities in the coming years. The organization has expanded its outreach by launching programs in a new state of Bihar and is in the process of adding new grantees. A significant majority of the funds are fully committed to program expenditure for a specific project, the Audacious Project, to ensure goals are achieved in terms of enrolling 1.56 million girls into school in rural communities in India and improving learning for 950,000 children and to ensure the current program villages and the recipient children are funded until the 5-year project closure. There will be a need in the next financial year to increase fundraising and source new donors in order to meet the educational needs of girls served by our programs beyond the 5 years of the Audacious Project. This has become even more urgent due to the fallout of the pandemic and its disproportionately negative impact on girls' education.
