This educational failure is undermining the Black/African American community at its foundation. The Black Education Strategy Roundtable tackles some of our communities' toughest problems by advocating for educational change, reform and transformation. Our mission is to achieve systemic changes in education that result in excellence and equity for Black/African American students at all levels of the education continuum and raise the bar for all students. We work to achieve the goal of 100% of Black/African American students will graduate with a meaningful high school diploma, exceptionally prepared for college, work, productive citizenship and life. Student and Family Engagement: Primary work was focused on researching the "Status of the Black Student" in Washington. We have undertaken a multiyear project investigating inequities experienced by Black Students and Families in K -12 schools. We have three focus areas that include: framing the research within a systems perspective, evolving a generative narrative undergirded by inclusion of the voices of our Black Students and Families, and applying a holistic lens to frame strategies of redress. Coalition Engagement: We work with local organizations whose primary goal is to develop and support K-12 policies that improve educational attainment for all students. Coalitions include High School Success Coalition, WA Charters Association, PIE Network, WA STEM, et.al. We are a unique voice in these coalitions because our purpose is to elevate Black Voice providing input on the experiences of Black Students and Families in K-12 education. Our work underscores the impact of state and local policies on the communities we serve. Membership Connections & Education: (1450 Members) BESR reaches members of our community through our monthly publications and virtual meetings. We share updates on policies, resources, and opportunities that impact our community. We also respond to requests for resources or support needed for navigating the K-12 system.
