When navigating a rare disease the complications are experienced by the patient, their loved ones and health care and providers trying to treat them. At any given moment in the health care system - the providers are stretched to meet the needs and are simply unable to because of time, resources or training. Patients and loved ones are overwhelmed and not able to act as their most effective selves because of not being well or feeling intimidated.The system breaks down. ERDC knows it cannot fix the healthcare system - but we believe there are tools to help everyone in the system become more effective. Our primary tool - Hospital Emergency Advocacy & Treatment Kits (HEAT Kits) are designed to be disease specific and enable patients and loved ones to be more prepared to help improve the health visit. Our Vasculitis kits were distributed to more than 200 people across the US as well as in Canada, Australia and Europe. With a focus on improving quality of care, we design and deliver simple effective tools to used when the unexpected occurs. We serve people in 42 of the 50 states. The byproduct of the tools helps patients and care partners build confidence to navigate medical settings. Additionally we provide livestream education designed to surface barriers and challenges experienced by patients in medical settings. Specifically we address barriers to self advocacy, medications and treatments and communicating a health history. We also provide livestream education about policy and regulations that may impact access to care and treatments, health insurance practices and other relevant topics to people impacted by rare disease.
