Museum collections are not recognized as assets in the financial statements. Purchases of collection items are recorded as decreases in unrestricted net assets in the year in which the items are acquired, or as restricted net assets if the funds used to purchase the items are restricted by donors. Contributed collection items are not reflected on the financial statements. Proceeds from deaccessions or insurance recoveries are reflected as increases in the appropriate net asset classes. Proceeds from sales of collection items are used to acquire other items for similar exhibition purposes. Part V, line 4: The Museum's endowment funds were established to improve the financial stability of the Organization. The Board adopted endowment policies developed in accordance with the Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act ("UPMIFA"). The board of directors has interpreted UPMIFA as requiring the preservation of the fair value of the original gift as of the gift date of the donor-restricted endowment funds absent explicit donor stipulations to the contrary. Part X, Line 2: Accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America requires management to evaluate tax positions taken by the Museum and recognize a tax liability if the Museum has taken a tax position that more likely than not would not be sustained upon examination by a tax authority. The Museum is subject to routine audits by taxing jurisdictions; however, there are currently no audits for any tax periods in progress. External partnerships expand on the STEAM learning built into the Museum's exhibits and programs and include collaborations with numerous community-based organizations including Russian River Keepers, Providence Healthcare, and Corazn Healdsburg. The Museum welcomed 186,000 visitors in 2022-23, a 32% increase over the prior year and pre-pandemic levels. Notably, 32,000 of those visitors entered the Museum through discounted membership and admissions as a result of our Access for All program for low-income children and their caregivers. A bustling hub of activity, on peak attendance days the facility is bursting at the seams. As a result, CMOSC is currently in the quiet phase of an expansion campaign that would add 16,000 sf of indoor exhibit space and significantly expand its offerings for children ages 8-12.
