Through this program we (1) facilitated virtual professional development and community-building convenings to support Black educators as they lead classrooms during COVID-19 (2) partnered with mental health professionals to provide group therapy sessions and wellness resources curated for educators (3) provided technology supplies to BE NOLA Collective schools and secured resources for music therapy programs (4) co-sponsored the Caring for Community Through COVID radio show, which provided parents and educators with virtual learning resources and strategies to maintain wellness and mental health as they headed back to school during COVID-19 (5) established a Virtual Community Hub to support educators during a challenging and unpredictable year. 211876 Kellogg: Funds were used for a narrative-change, community engagement program to build greater connection among Black educators and supporting organizations, and shift the narrative on the work and impact of Black educators to the end of creating more sustainable school environments in New Orleans. Components of this program included a Virtual Summit for Educators; Published Research Report; and a Citywide Public Awareness Campaign. The Black Brilliance Summit was held virtually in August 2020 with sessions led by notable national and local leaders. BE NOLA released Black Brilliance: Field Notes on Black Education In New Orleans (2019-2020) in the fall of 2020. The insights and learnings in the report were based on insights gathered from education stakeholders during the previous calendar year. The citywide Black Brilliance Campaign to disseminated findings of the report to the public. 59981 Walton Foundation Funds were used to build the capacity of a cohort of schools led by diverse leaders to increase the quality of education to create better outcomes and opportunities for Black children in New Orleans. The 2020 BE NOLA Collective program included 4 schools and featured curated programming for both school leaders (principals and CEOs) and middle leaders (school administrators and teacher leaders). Topics discussed in virtual school leader sessions included: culturally relevant instruction, school climate, and culture, creating sustainable and effective community and family engagement, operations, finance, and fundraising/development. Likewise, middle leaders were offered support virtually via expert and educator-led professional development sessions. Topics for middle leaders included: culturally relevant pedagogy, teaching and leadership, school climate and culture, community and family engagement, project planning/management, time management.
